Bombers ambassadors the Breen Team share a summer of showjumping success
November 22, 2022

Bombers ambassadors the Breen Team have had a busy year, notably launching their first ever hybrid auction, and celebrating Shane Breen’s iconic Derby win with and Can Ya Makan. Here, we share some of their recent successes…

“It was my day today…”
The showjumping season of 2022 was jam-packed, boasting shows in the UK, Ireland and Europe. Shane achieved a career-first by winning the iconic Hickstead Derby in 2022 (pictured left). On his home turf, the Irishman delivered the sole clear round with Can Ya Makan. “It was his day; he’s been an amazing horse for me in my career.”

“When I jumped over the last with Can Ya Makan, something inside of me got quite emotional. Thankfully, it was my day today. To win the Derby was something I had been trying to do for a while,” Shane says.

Auction success

Another highlight of the summer was the team’s first ever hybrid auction, which was a huge success. “This was incredible addition to Breen Equestrian and we are excited to be hosting more in the future,” Shane adds of the event, pictured below right.

Z7 Regal Don and Haya shine

Earlier in the season the team had kicked off a successful streak at Bolesworth, where the young horses added miles onto their clock, and Z7 Regal Don took 4th in the 2* GP Qualifier with rider Jack Ryan.

Heading over to Ireland, it was the super mare Haya who never was out of the top 10 in the 5* classes at Dublin, taking 5th in the 5* Minvera Stakes, 4th in the 5* Speed Derby and 8th in the 5* Speed Championship (pictured above left and also top right of the page).

“We have always believed this mare was going to be special and she’s proven that every time she steps in the ring,” Haya’s rider Shane explains.

LGCT campaigning

At the Longines Global Champions Tour (LGCT) in Valkenswaard, Vistogrand jumped phenomenally to help the Rome Gladiators come third; the horse had only made his 5* debut earlier this year. “He’s so exciting; Vistogrand has a huge engine with enormous talent, and real championship ability,” Shane Breen explains of the stallion.

At the Rome leg, Z7 Ipswich (pictured below right) proved to be quick and careful to win the opening 5* class with Shane, and followed up this perfomance in New York by jumping clear for the Gladiators. In New York, it was Haya’s time to take the victory, speeding to top spot in the 5* 1.45 Speed Class. (The GCL Super Cup Champions league was eventually won by the Miami Celtics, leaving the Rome Gladiators out of the placings this time around, having ridden some amazing rounds this season).

HOYS success

For the Horse of the Year Show, the start of the indoor showjumping season, Shane took a team up to Birmingham, and they did not disappoint. Vistogrand jumped to 3rd in the 3* Accumulator, as well as joint 2nd in the 6-bar to showcase his scope; but it was Cuick Star Kervec who was star of the show, winning the iconic Leading Showjumper of the Year 3* Grand Prix with Shane.

The pair pipped John Whitaker, who was celebrating 50 years of competing at the show, by 19 hundredths of a second. “He has an amazing stride, his scope is incredible. I have never ridden a horse with that much scope in my life,” Shane states.

We wish the Breen Team well in their current endeavours and congratulate them on a fantastic season to date.
